NATO in Historical Perspective - Nuclear Brinkmanship is Soooo 20th Century
“Just to give you a hypothetical, we would respond by leading a NATO – a collective – effort that would take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine and also in Crimea and every ship in the Black Sea.” - Retired US General David Petraeus
“Hypersonic [missiles] are sure to hit targets in Europe and the U.S. much faster.” - Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev

Its De-escalation and De-nuclearization or Bust
Posted by James Heddle and Mary Beth Brangan - EON
No matter who is fighting whom or why, war is obsolete and nuclear war should be unthinkable by all of humankind. We must do all we can to prevent this dire situation from escalating any further.
We live - as at no previous time in history - in a daily barrage of competing war messages enabled by an unprecedented high tech armamentarium of psyop strategies and psychotronic tools never before deployed worldwide in human history.
Like fish, unaware of the water in which they swim, we are immersed 24/7 in an unprecedented total propaganda environment of engineered cognitive confusion.
We pray that enough people turn away from the hatred and fear being pumped out. We pray enough people will choose creation and compassion over destruction and hate. We pray that those who think they would profit from using these abhorrent weapons wake up and realize they can’t help but be destroyed too.
NATO is now conducting nuclear war maneuvers greatly increasing risk of accidental or deliberate use. Artificial intelligence is now incorporated into nuclear weapons systems also increasing risk of mistakes. Please do whatever you can to encourage negotiations and peace.
A little accurate, documented historical background may help bring a bit of rational clarity and ‘total situational awareness.’
"NATO was formed to deal with problems created by its own existence."
That statement, from an anonymous observer, seems to be born out in the links below, especially the the wide-ranging, informed and informative discussion of the Ukraine imbroglio by US defense analyst and former White House briefer - now turned peoples' briefer - Ray McGovern. A crash course in Real Geopolitics 101.
McGovern's views are also supported by three other backgrounders linked to below.
For a brief, preliminary backgrounder, here's a summary of information gleaned from the current issue of NukeWatchQuarterly and other sources.
The Nuclear Geo-Landscape - A Brief Briefing
There are nine nuclear-armed governments in the world: Russia, US, China, France, UK, Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea.
The five nuclear powers that have ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) - China , France , the Soviet Union/Russian Federation, the United Kingdom , and the United States - have never, during the Treaty’s 30 years in force, complied with its Article IV: i.e., to denuclearize. They are also the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Three Grand Imperatives
ln his1998 book, The Grand Chessboard, geo-strategist Zbigniew Brzeziński wrote, " ...it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America." He went on to say:
"..how America manages Eurasia is critical. A power that dominates Eurasia would control two of the world's three most advanced and economically productive regions. A mere glance at the map also suggests that control over Eurasia would almost automatically entail Africa's subordination, rendering the Western Hemisphere and Oceania (Australia) geopolitically peripheral to the world's central continent. About 75 per cent of the world's people live in Eurasia, and most of the world's physical wealth is there as well, both in its enterprises and underneath its soil”.
"...To put it in a terminology that harkens back to the more brutal age of ancient Empires, the three grand imperatives of imperial geo-strategy are to prevent collusion and maintain security dependence among the vassals (puppets), to keep tributaries pliant and protected, and to keep the barbarians from coming together.”
That seems to have been the essence of US and therefore of NATO strategy ever since.
For example, see the Rand Corporation’s 2019 report, Overextending and Unbalancing Russia - Assessing the Impact of Cost-Imposing Options.
Situational Awareness
Today, 100-150 US Air Force B61 thermonuclear weapons are stationed at two NATO bases in Italy, one each in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Turkey. These 179-kiloton H-bombs are 11.3 time more powerful than the US bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
The stationing of these weapons in six NATO countries facing Russia can only be seen by Russians for what it is – an aggressive provocation.
NATO has 50 member states. According to Greg Mello Director of the Los Alamos Nuclear Study Group in Albuquerque, New Mexico, NATO “spends more on armaments than the rest of the world combined,” and also wields the combined economic clout of all its 50 member states.
The signing on June 30 by NATO officials of a so-called “Strategic Concept’ agreement can also be seen as a threat. NATO’s “Strategic Concept” document claims that “nuclear capability is to preserve peace, prevent coercion, and deter aggression,” then goes on to assert that, “As long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO will remain a nuclear alliance.”
NATO’s “Defense Contact Group” supplies arms to Ukrainian forces.
Making NATO’s power structure blatantly clear, the statement affirms, “strategic nuclear forces, particularly those of the United States, are the supreme guarantee of the security of the Alliance.”
In 1965, Herman Kahn published a 44-step “Escalation Ladder” of the phases leading to nuclear war. It looks like the final rungs of that ladder-to-disaster are now being approached.
Clearly, deescallation and denuclearization are the only rational responses.

Where Are The Germans? Russia, China, The World vs The USA - Core Interests & Sovereignty
Ray McGovern with a riveting conversation beginning with the assault on Germany by...MI6, UK, CIA/USA. Will the German people rise up or lie down? Russia's response to recent provocations: massive missile attacks on key Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. China respects each nation's "core interests," and "sovereignty." What does that mean? Also, what are China's core interests in Taiwan? So many invaluable insights and so little time.

Putin, Lenin, Imperialism and the (Real) History of Ukraine
We remain in the historical era of capitalist imperialism. This is not a time to make peace with it. Our task in this country is to defeat our ruling class, and nobody else’s.

"In the real world, the U.S. has acted in the world since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the collapse of the Warsaw Pact, the collapse of what Washington perceived as the global communist movement, with an effort to encircle Russia with the most horrifically threatening military force in world history. It has expanded NATO in the absence of any real threat to itself from 16 to 28 members, bordering Russia on the Baltic coast and threatening to encircle it entirely. It has used NATO to pursue wars in Serbia, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria, in the last case illegally intervening in a failed effort to gain control over a longstanding Russian ally. "No one in their right mind can suggest that Russia holds a candle to the U.S. in imperial arrogance. Certainly not in this century. "In the real world, Biden became president determined to both reassert U.S. “global leadership” and to continue NATO expansion.

Ukraine & Nukes
March 3, 2022.
By Steven Starr
Special to Consortium News
After a New York Times reporter grossly distorted what Putin and Zelensky have said and done about nuclear weapons, Steven Starr corrects the record and deplores Western media, in general, for misinforming and leading the entire world in a dangerous direction.
"In his Times piece, Sanger states, “American officials have said repeatedly that they have no plans to place nuclear weapons in Ukraine.”
"But the U.S. and NATO have refused to sign legally binding treaties with Russia to this effect. In reality, the U.S. has been making Ukraine a de facto member of NATO, while training and supplying its military forces and conducting joint exercises on Ukrainian territory. Why wouldn’t the U.S. place nuclear weapons in Ukraine — they have already done so at military bases within the borders of five other European members of NATO. This in fact violates the spirit of the NPT, another issue that Sanger avoids when he notes that Russia has demanded that the U.S. remove nuclear weapons from the European NATO-member states.
"For years the U.S. proclaimed that the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) facilities it was placing in Romania and Poland, on the Russian border, were to protect against an “Iranian threat,” even though Iran had no nuclear weapons or missiles that could reach the U.S. But the dual-use Mark 41 launching systems used in the Aegis Ashore BMD facilities can be used to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles, and will be fitted with SM-6 missiles that, if armed with nuclear warheads, could hit Moscow in five-to-six minutes. Putin explicitly warned journalists about this danger in 2016; Russia included the removal of the U.S. BMD facilities in Romania and Poland in its draft treaties presented to the U.S. and NATO last December.
